Don Giovanni

Mozart

The vital factor for me in staging any classical work is that its themes resonate with a modern audience. With the recent events surrounding the #MeToo movement - specifically the exposure of power abuse within the entertainment industry – it was interesting to see Don Giovanni through a different lens.

In Giovanni we see a battle between the Aesthetic and the Ethical. For centuries men in power have created a luring aesthetic world in which they can easily abuse their power. Until recently this has remained unchallenged and it has been down to brave figures to bring this façade crashing down and forcing these power players to face up to their abusive behavior.
